My fiance is on SSI (perminently disabled) but has two kids. She cannot work but then how does she get the child tax credit? Can she file taxes if she is on SSI?

If her only income is Social Security, then she does not have a filing requirement , so she would not be eligible to claim the Child Tax credit, nor the Earned Income Credit, She has no taxable income, and no Earned Income

Judy is correct. SSI is not taxable income. One can only benefit from a tax credit if there is taxable income to credit it against. Depending on what state she's in there may be other tax-linked benefits to filing taxes nonetheless. For example, when I was on SSI I filed for federal and state taxes because in my state there was a renter's rebate available for low-income residents.

Rob is incorrect in stating that Social Security is not taxable. It is. SSI and Social Security and SSDI are all different types of benefits. People are commonly confused about them.

Good luck and congratulations on your engagement.

SSI isn't taxable. She would owe no taxes, so can't get the child tax credit. That credit can only reduce taxes down to zero. Hers is already at zero.
