I think my son would do better to take his meds and get some rest. But he is 4 and no matter how bad he feels he wants to be up playing all the time and thinks I am punishing him when I make him take a nap. What do you do?

I always let them play. Aside from my thinking its pretty much "torture" to be made to stay in bed when you're not in the mood to rest, I always found it was a good way for me to get a reading on whether their fever was up or whether they were feeling any better.

When they're really feeling horrible they don't feel like being up and playing. A question pediatricians sometimes ask when you call them is, "Is he up and around playing?"

If they're playing it obviously doesn't always have to mean they're all better, but it is always a good sign.

At 4 years old, they have their own mind. You can not force them to lay down and rest. I have 2 kids 7 & 3. I have found there are good illnesses and bad illnesses so to speak. If they are very sick they will usually stay put on the couch and watch tv most of the day. Their bodies will let them know when they need to rest. The way I handle my 7 year old & my 3 year old are different. If my older child is sick, I make her rest. This is especially true if she needs to miss school. But at 4, they just don't understand the point of resting. Hope this helps.

I would let him play quietly & maybe after lunch, you could suggest that he crawls into his bed & take a nap. Maybe you could read a short story to him & the leave the room. Tell him he doesn't have to sleep if he's not tired but that he has to lie down.

Is it the medicine making him active? My son is sick at this time, but his medicine gives him a boost of energy, so I am letting play around as long as he is not bouncing or running. He is also ADHD, but on Focalin XR. Maybe let him watch a movie or play a game to keep him in one place. Good luck.

I would encourage quiet activities and early bedtimes but wouldn't make him stay in bed.

Put him in his bed, but give him something he can do while lying there
