I am trying to figure out if I can contact microsoft for the XP product code or not? I am redoing my gf's computer, and reformatting and all, and she has XP on her computer, and I have the disk, but the disk came from dell where she bought her other computer, well the disk and jacket have no code on it, and we cannot find the original case, in hopes that that has it on it. Can I view the code in her windows? We are going to reformat to Vista, but is like $80 cheaper if you do upgrade version, and don't want to throw $$ away if she has already paid for XP.

Sounds like you have 2 problems
1. The disk you have is for a DELL and it's their restore disk and it will check to see if your restoring a DELL
2. You have a second computer without a legit OS disk. Where is disk from second computer?

Only way I can figure to get around it is buy the Vista upgrade... when you reformat using the Vista disk borrow someones XP disk so that when Vista asks for an old OS you have a disk... the DELL one won't work.

GOOD LUCK

Since her PC came from Dell, there should be a sticker on it with the CD key. It's usually either in back or on the side.
