im looking into getting a DVD player to play my downloaded movies. i can only download in xvid format will it work on a divx dvd player or is there a converter i have to use? thx for ur time

Both xvid and divx are based on MPEG-4; with most of the differences on how they do some pre- and post-processing.
In principle, any player that supports MPEG-4 should be able to play both, but it it is not always the case.
Divx is more standardized, so easier to support. Xvid is usually a moving target as far as specs go, so tougher to support.
Again, read the specs of the player and make sure xvid is explicitly supported.

A DVD player, usualy play both formats .
