I know my dog, Kilo, thinks this is a game but it is awfully frustrating when I can't get him to drop something. It is usually socks or anything that has been very close to my body. He thinks it is a game and runs all over the house with the object. I try to change as soon as I get home before I let him out but sometimes he is already out and sneaks in our closet away with something very quickly. I always put my stuff away but like I said he is so fast and try and find something to get into and run with it. How do I stop this. I don't run after him when he gets it, I walk towards him and sternly say "NO, drop it". When I walk towards him he just hides behind something or runs. He just turned 1 yr old on Feb 2, 2007 so he still has puppy behaviors. How do I correct this?

First, you need to teach your dog to come on command. Once that is accomplished, then you teach your dog to "give" or "release". To do the "give" you simply need to offer food when your dog has something you need to get. He'll drop the item to take the food. Start adding the cue word you want to use (give, release, drop it) and with some time and patience, you'll have him dropping when you ask without the lure of food to do so. These kinds of training things are really good to start as soon as a new puppy comes into your home, too.

You are right, this is puppy behavior and he is trying to play and bond with you (he missed you), but your right about how frustrating it is and needs corrected. You are doing it right, but maybe need a few little adjustments. When he grabs something that you want him to drop, always use his name first in a stern voice to get his attention then say drop it with a loud clap or similar. Use the clap along with the word no. So kinda like....KILO, loud clap and NO.....DROP IT. If you can actually get close to him you can press behind the canine tooth (area is sensitive) and tell him to drop it. He will open his mouth for that. Just make sure you don't hurt him. You will learn how much pressure is needed for him. At a year old he might be a little big, but for puppies you can make them drop things by slightly lifting there back feet off the floor.

Haha, our puppy does this too. It's cute, but incredibly annoying, huh? When our puppy has something she's not supposed to in her mouth, we go to her, gently grab her muzzle and tuck her jowls (the gums on her bottom jaw) into her mouth. That way, if she does chomp down, it will hurt (a little, but enough). And we say, "Drop it." She learns to associate "Drop it" with pain if she continues to hold onto to the object. Now that we've been doing this for a while, she knows what's coming. It's great when she has a dirty sock in her mouth, we start walking to her and say drop it, and she does drop it! Then she gives us a look like "What did I do??!" haha . . . good luck!

i have a deaf dog and this is how i trained him to drop it.... (he likes my remote and cell phone) i take him in the yard when i get home from work with a bag of vitasmart(orhowever you spell it) yogart drops. I picked these because there small and have all kinds of vitimans for the dog. i would throw him a ball he would go get it then run up to me then do a circle then run off wanting me to chase him. so i sat down on the porch till him came back, with or without the ball, i gave him the treat. before long he was getting the ball bring it back and waiting for his treat. now if he picks up the remote i look at him and he drops it and i give him a good ol belly scratching

What you do is go up to your dog, look at him sternly, point your finger at him, and say TCCCH.(its kind of hard to explain this sound, but try your best). If your dog still doesn't listen then u take him outside and let him think about what he did (i know that it sounds kind of stupid, but it works with my dog). Let him know that u r the boss and he should shape up. Keep doing this as he gets older and he will get the point. :)

P.S: Im not trying to tell u 2 punish your dog. Your dog will not like u if u yell at him all the time. My sister used 2 yell at my dog and he has been avoiding her 4 2 years.

during a training session.... teach him to "take it" offer him a ball, sock etc. when he take it PRAISE then say "drop it" and push his lip onto his teeth , when he releases PRAISE teach him both commands.......... now if he grabs your stuff before you teach him these things.. hoot and holler and laugh and go into another room.... make him chase you..... ( have treats with you) when he gets to to you show him cookie and he will drop the item ignore it when he wants you to chase him....
