I went through Consumer Credit Counseling, they were helpful but you have to pay a fee to them on top of your credit card payment.

I used CCCS their website is www.moneymanagement.org
Once you enroll - you CAN NOT use your existing cards and can't apply for any new ones. (it sounds scary, but you cant pay off debt if you can charge new)
I had a very good experience with them. I had no blemishes on my credit report when I enrolled (no collection items, late pays, etc.) so my credit was not affected much. We fell on some hard times when my ex-fiance went back school and his income was cut to a third of what he was normally making. I handled payig the bills and he didn't stress about the money. (He is now going thru backruptcy). I left about 3 months after I joined CCCS. Got a grip on my financial life and paid of 18,000. in credit card debt - 2 years early. It is a great feeling! My credit scores are now in the mid 700's.
While you do have to pay a fee to CCCS (it was about 30/mo). They lowered my payments and renegotiated my rates that went through the roof. So, the 30 dollars was worth it to me. They also try to get the credit card companys to waive late and over the limit fees.
CCCS plans for you to payoff your debt within 5 years and helps you create a budget. Before you contact them (if you decide to) sit down and really think aboout how much money you spent that you dont think about. ie, pets, hair cuts, and gifts.
Good Luck! You can do it if you put your mind to it!!

Look at www.daveramsey.com, and check out Dave Ramsey's book The Total Money Makeover. You'll never want to use a credit card ever again.

every company that says for $14 they'll help you with credit card debt is a scam. I have heard numerous that the best deal is to just call the credit card company yourself and negotiate. at least i'm assuming that what you want help for anyways. if not, i still say call the credit card company yourself.
