The laser was developed by Naval Research Labatories in Washington, DC. For those that do not know where Naval Research Labatories is that is right next to Bolling Air Force Base and Naval Base Anacostia.
The laser itself which cannot be found on the web for some strange reason. But, when I was in the NAVY I found out; the laser itself could cut through 6 feet of steel. This source was when I was stationed at Naval District Washington. I talked to a bunch of the scientist about Star Wars. I always wanted to know more about it. But, this is the little information I got.
It was primarily used to destroy ICBMs. But, without tracking devices on ICBMs could not hit one at all. According to various sources also not on the web. 3 were launched and that came from a friend of mine who works at NASA. Who is an Electronic Engineer who worked on the guidance system.
Now, on other note many of todays US Presidents visited Skywalker Ranch. Only one President is never, ever allowed to visit. And, that is George Lucas who sued the US Government for copyright and trademark infringement. And, hates Reagan to this very day for using the Star Wars name. For an orbital defense satellite.

The short version of the Star Wars project.
The Star Wars project was formally known as the Space Defense Initiative (SDI).
Reagan was smart and studied his enemy and knew Russia spent a disproportionate amount of money on defense (and offense) and a lot of money went into anti-satalite (ASAT) and anti balistic missle research.
While the SDI plan was for space based weapons platforms and anti-missle satellites it was mostly smoke and mirrors. The purpose behind the SDI project was to frighten the enemy and force their hand into negotiations. The SDI project would have been prohibitively expensive for the USA and countering it would have been impossible for the already bankrupt USSR.
The SDI project is what forced the USSR to face reality and eventually led Gorbachev to convince the Poliburo that teir experimentatoin with communism was a failure. The USSR satellite countries were also convincing them of that, but it was the SDI project that pushed the USSR over the edge.

Please, President Reagan. Ronald is that guy that works for McDonald's.
The idea behind Star Wars as President Reagan proposed it was spies in the sky and weapons that would make it impossible to launch a sneak attack or even to create weapons that the other side would not know about. They could shoot down anything headed our way, and it would be obvious once the Soviets were listening in to the satellites. It was not just grandstanding to say he would freely share this information with the Soviets: they would know how we could beat them, and wouldn't try anything.
It was part of Reagan's plan to basically out-spend the Soviets, knowing their inefficiency and self-destructive ways would make them unable to keep up. He was right. Yeltsin proved it.

Star Wars was a space based, nuclear missile defense system, designed to destroy up to 98% of all Soviet inbound missiles .
The shuttle missions were top secret in Reagen's presidency. They were putting laser generating and targeting mirror satellites in orbit.
In the event of a nuclear war, Russia would have exhausted their nuclear stockpile while ours remained intact. Russia would then only have conventional arms.
The US govt put this type of info out to the press. The press ate it up. So did the general population of the US. So did Russia's leadership.
They broke their economy trying to keep pace. The Berlin Wall fell. The Soviet Empire crumbled into separate countries. The Cold War ended.
All because Russia believed the lies.
The technology did not yet exist to make star wars work.

well there was no project, just a lie to scare the soviet union. leave it to an ex actor/president to "create" a star war project. we found this out years later when we wondered where are these devices (which were LAZERS!! LOL) that are suppose to "zap" the oncoming missles!? lmao it's kind of funny to think about it now. lazors reaching outer space to kill anything that came into our territory. but he was NOT a dumb president. he got us through the last leg of the cold war without us getting "nuked".
anyway i dont believe there was a star war project. like i said i believe it was fiction to scare off the soviet union. however there is info on the subject. if you want to "buy" into it...here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_Defense_Initiative

Everything you ever needed to know about the Star Wars Program
UPDATE:
Kitty... please stop talking about things you know little about or only heard about somewhat from 3rd parties.

Yes George Lucas tried to sue the Government for using the "Star Wars" name. but dear. George Lucas is NOT a president and George IS allowed to visit the Skywalker ranch as it is HIS ranch.
