The crown molding may draw more attention to the ceiling which may create a perception that the ceiling is lower. There are things that you can do to counteract this perception.

Paint the molding the same color as the ceiling and paint the ceiling a lighter color than the walls. Even if it's the same color, go with a lighter shade of the same color. This will create the illusion that the ceiling is higher than it is.

Molding on any kind is an accent....Use a smaller crown molding...3 1/2 inch ....It won't make the ceiling look lower...

As long as you keep it in proportion to the room, crown moulding always looks beautiful. The secret is that if your room is "petite", then your crown needs to be thinner than in a taller room. There are also tricks, like painting your wall color from 1.5" below the crown on down, then painting from 1.5" on up the same color as your ceiling. That actually adds height and interest because it is visually lifting the ceiling from the walls and giving the illusion of more height and adding more interest.

Use small crown molding. It makes it look further up then it really is.
