New laws in effect. Go to the dealer with proof of ownership and the VIN and they will make you a key. Without proof of ownership they will not make it.

Once you have the new key, if it has the security chip in it you will have to have the vehicle towed in so they can program it to match the codes. You're looking at between $70 and $200, plus the towing costs.

If the locksmith was talking 3 keys, he probably planned to change out some of your locks, not a good idea.

By the way, the locksmith will probably send you a bill for his mileage to come out.

if you have NO keys what so ever then your probably going to have to change the switch if its a new car 2000 and up then you have to take it to the dealer or at least a locksmith that can program a chip cuz most likely your key had a chip in it so the car wont start if the chip isn't close by the will end up puting in a new switch and a new set of keys shood be given to you but it will be a heft cost but if it's an older car then just change the ignition switch and the door lockswitch so you can get in the car and out on older cars it's not that expensive

I have a 99 jetta and when i lost my key it cost 250 to have another one made. I later found out about a locksmith who can make the keys. granted it isn't an electronic key but it does work for the trunk doors glove box and ignition. The name of this man is Jay Orbit and he is amazing. I live in Manchester Nh, so if you do too then call this guy. If not he is always more than willing to help you out just by the phone
The # is 603-669-8690

i own a repair shop, and it will wind up costing you more than the lock smith wanted to do this for,a hundred wasn't a bad price for that one,if its unlocked you can take one of the door panels off and i think its the passenger side one has a number on it,they can make a key based on that number for that vehicle,i have done this several times, and it was a lot cheaper than going to a dealer, but it has to be a good lock smith ,they only charge 60 bucks to do it this way,and that's with 2 keys being made also, good luck i hope this help,s.

Dealer will cost more. You are just going to have to fork out the $$. This happened to me a few months ago and it was over $200 so $100 is not too bad. Good Luck!

The only limitation that the copies have is that they can not START the car, but they CAN open the doors and trunk.

I think you shoud pay for only 1 Key (At the dealership, whatever the cost), and make additional copies on your own.

Yes, it will be expensive at the dealership..it sucks and sometimes Sh*t happens -- but that's life.

He is pulling yours. Take the vin#. That is the number you can see thru the windshield on the drivers side on the dashboard(a little strip of metal). Take that number plus proof of ownership down to the local dealer. They can cut a key for your car.

Yes, you should go to the dealership. I know with newer VWs they can re-make your key based on the VIN of your car. It might not be cheap, but it's definitely worth checking out.

I know for Chrysler, they can cut new keys from a key code.

It's worth a call. You may need the Cars VIN for them to look up it's Key Code first...
