We just found a kitty, he's an unneutered male, probably about 2 years old, at a good weight. He was more than likely a recent dump seeing as he's so affectionate with humans. If you can't tell me a good brand of food, maybe can you tell me what I need to look for in the ingredients label?

Cats are obligate carnivores and do not need grains in their diet. Innova EVO is the best food produced...regular Innova is great, too. It's rather pricey, so a notch down to Solid Gold, Chicken Soup, etc. won't be bad, either. If cost a concern, remember than the higher quality the food is will be the less of that food that they eat. So it helps balance out the costs quite a bit.

This is my general rule of thumb: If it can be bought at a supermarket, it's crap. You want a food with NO CORN and as few other grains as possible. Cats just don't digest them. They can process the grains to a point and yes, they get energy from them...but their bodies metabolize them into sugars. So it's like primarily living on twinkies with the occasion healthy food thrown in.

If there is a grain in the first 3 ingredients, don't buy it. Look for identifiable protein sources like Chicken Meal instead of Meat Meal and Salmon Oil instead of Fish Oil. Good luck and hope I helped!

I'm a cat breeder, and with my whole male cat I'm careful not to feed fish or cheaper cat foods because of the ash content. High ash cat foods can make the cat prone to bladder stones and urinary blockage. Royal Canin, Iams or Science Diet are my choices.
I'd also recommend that this fellow be neutered asap, to guard against spraying behaviour and uncontrolled reproduction.

I always use IAMS cat food. It is more expensive, but it contains all the vitamins and nutrients they need to grow and thrive. If your cat is long haired then you should get the hairball control in the orange bag - it works and nothing else I have tried does.

DON'T USE IAMS, THEY USE ANIMAL TESTING AND VIVISECTION!!! Most compete foods have a good balance of nutrients - I would recommend Hills or Royal Canin.
