Ask to lay down on the table. It is helpful if you get dizzy or scared. Turn your head away and ask the blood draw-er to not talk to you about any details. Put your arm out for them and relax. Think about something completely different. Blood draws do not hurt. It is what goes on in your head about it that is the problem. Of course the occasional incompetent blood taker might come along but it's nothing a few deep breaths can't take care of.

First, 'fess up and say that you're scared. You won't be the first, and they'll probably have some tactics available that have worked for people more scared than you are.
Deep breathing really does help. And look away ... you ought to be able to take a friend with you who can talk to you while it's happening, or there should be a friendly nurse who can do the same.
Best thing I've ever met (and this works when you tense up in anticipation when being worked over by a chiropractor) is being told to wiggle your toes at the moment they're going in. I've ruined the surprise factor somewhat, but not completely I hope.
Good luck.

It will be held in place by an arm board. WHat they will have you do is lie down on a specail table that has an extension on it for your arm. Then they will take your arm and secure it to the board with a cushioned strap. The best thing to do is to relax and look away. If you keep struggling they will have to keep trying over and over. The best thing to do is to breath in through your nose and out through your mouth and think of something else. I used to have this same problem and singing to myself helped ALOT. Try what I suggested. And you will find that getting stuck once is far better than 3 or more right?

they will fasten your wrist down with velcro or a buckle, like a small seat belt. Maybe your elbow too.
Don't worry, because a needle is very tiny. You can do more damage to your body just by coughing or scratching a mosquito bite too much.
The hair growing out of your skin makes a hole about the same size as that needle. Put things in perspective :)
