Kashmir is not a commodity. It has people and they include not only the violent but also the silent majority. Kashmiris have nothing in common with Pakistan notwithstanding the fact that some of them profess the same faith. Kashmir has a Sufi culture and a spirit of brotherhood and Pakistan has not demonstrated any ability to govern its different people with equal rights. The so called Azad Kashmir has not ever had a representative govt. I think autonomy within a secular democratic framework is the answer.

While history has shown that partitions and creation of new countries seldom work, Kashmir is a sore point between India and Pakistan which will not heal. An independent Kashmir, having a secular, democratic government, is the only hope for lasting peace. Dividing Kashmir between India and Pakistan will also not work - remember the partitioning of India when the British left! There are people living there; it is not a place on a map.
