I am a junior in high school and have to decide what classes to take next year. I want to go to nursing school. What math class should I take, A.P. Statistics or Pre-Calculus and Discrete Mathematics. I'm going to take Anatomy, should I also take Advanced Biology, Physics or Chemistry? Is it important to take hard english classes?

My teacher was just talking about this the other day. For a medical career, you should definetly take AP Biology in your SENIOR YEAR so you remember more, he said it has helped his past students. Also, anatomy is important and as long as you take some sort of a higher math you should be fine. CP English would be fine, as far as I know.

Well, in the health profession, you may be required to know calculus to get your degree. Therefore, I think you should take Pre-calculus junior year and Calculus senior year. Statistics is also informative, so you might consider taking that too if you have space in your schedule. Taking AP Biology would be important.

And a hard English class is a good idea. It makes you look like you can communicate with your patients better, since English is communication.

I would definitely take the extra science... probably the Advanced Biology. As for the math, I am not sure. You should take the highest english that you are able to take because when it comes time to "test out" of college classes, you might not have to take as much english. I wish that I would have thought ahead as you are. I am a teacher but did very little looking ahead in high school, so I had to take most of my college classes while my friends tested out of them. Good Luck with everything!!

I am a college English instructor.

You are on the correct path; but you cannot get a degree in nursing from any college without taking and passing English (and usually psychology) ...so start reading and writing and brushing up on your grammar and punctuation right now if you are having any problems.

Great choice to go to a nursing school. All the courses you mentioned will be helpful. Because nurses have several functions to perform, it can never hurt to learn all you can so you can advance yourself and receive better pay.
