Yes, service pack 2 adds better security for the Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6. But, SP2 adds more than just security fixes. It adds other items, such as improved support for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless networks, new features for Tablet and Media Center PCs, and updates for XP's multimedia components. Many other Windows software requires SP2, such as Windows Defender and Internet Explorer 7. All in all, it is to your benefit to install it.

Of course, there are a number of things you should do prior to installing it. Please read PC World Magazine's article on what to do.

"Your XP Service Pack 2 Survival Guide" -- written by Steve Bass, pcworld.com (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,118510-page,1/article.html)

As an added bonus, you don't need to download SP2. Instead, you can order a service pack CD. The link is http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

1) What Windows platform are you running now?
2) Was this Windows platform preloaded or was it a purchased platform?
3) What is your computer's memory capacity, processor speed, sound card compression ratio, video compression, etc?

If you have a clunky (no offense) 386, is it worth getting Windows XP?

NOT FOR THAT COMPUTER IT ISN'T!

These are the things that should be answered by you first before everyone goes off on tangents speaking on anything related to XP and its SPs.

But let's just assume you're running XP SP1: yes, get SP2 if your computer can handle it; I've seen it as low as $49 (this was through my college though). If your system is registered through Microsoft, you can use their site to upgrade & upload.

I strongly recommend against loading any operating system software from freewares or sharewares.
