Think about it. If you, (a Christian for instance), were watching the news and saw a story about a man who (let's say...) goes to the pet store and buys up every animal in sight, and claims that God told him to do it......Would you think he was a whacko, or a legitimate Christian?
Or....
If the real Jesus came to your front door, would you think he's a whacko and slam the door in his face? Or would you believe him and invite him in?
My point is.....we may not all be completely atheist. But deep down, we are all skeptics. I think that some Christians, deep down, don't really believe in God or any of the stories...they just go to church to be "on the safe side".
Former Christians, and Atheists.....wouldn't you agree?

To Mlaheji: That is why I said "Christians, for instance).....that means, for example.

To Esther: I am not speaking for all non-believers, and I am simply stating an observation and seeing if others have observed the same.

By the way, I should say that I'm not talking out of my @ss. I am a former Christian, turned agnostic.

I suspect this is largely true.

My particular fascination is with stories of mothers murdering their children because god told them to. There's not a pastor anywhere who would agree that these women were actually receiving divine instructions -- but why is that? Don't they believe that it was right and proper for Abraham to obey similar instructions? So why do they think Abraham was sane but these women are crazy? This is an outright contradiction of their most basic belief, and they just can't see it.

Ummmm ... NO. I was an atheist PRIOR to becoming a Christian. Just because one is skeptical about some parts of Christianity doesn't change who Jesus was and is.

As for going to church to be on the "safe side", you really don't understand Christianity and the purpose of church AT ALL. You claim you were once a Christian but I have serious doubts as you really don't get it and I doubt you ever did.

I'm a christian and deep down I'm not an atheist at all. i believe what i hear as well as what i see. I never go to church just to be on the safe side i go there because of my own personal reasons. you can't judge Christians based on the ones/few you know. we're all different and that is one thing you should really get used to. As for Jesus knocking on my door well, that is a very interesting theory as Jesus is always among us and with us everyday. there is a verse about that in the bible and that is for you to look for and find out. anyway when Jesus was among the Jews they never excepted him and that is a lesson to the people who think that Jesus is going to knock on their doors in his mighty glory claiming he's the Messiah.

Too general a statement. To some they could feel that way. This is because humans would want to run away from God. Their so doing can be considered as an action of atheists. That is if wrong is committed, in failing to understand the merciful and gracious God, he would wish God was not there to see him committing the wrong.

I believe with all of my heart and soul and have no doubt that God exists. I don't have to go anywhere to worship, I can worship Him wherever I am. If I go to church it's because I want to be there and has nothing to do with being on " the safe side"

You are absolutely right. Many thoughtful and educated church people, in their private thoughts, acknowledge that there is likely no God.
Yet there are more reasons to believe than just the facts; it is a whole tradition, culture and mindset, not to mention wishful thinking. I myself wish there were a God.
Also church and religion are social aspects of life, that many people really need.
If you list all the wierd and crazy things in the Bible that church people have to believe, you got to wonder, do they really; and the likely situation is, the intelligent ones don't.
Yet they will come on here and declare all kinds of fervant beliefs with a straight face and great righteous zeal. What a put-on.

Nope.

Deep down we are ALL sons of God.

Deep down God wants no one to perish.

2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Guess What ??

The pay is the same for all and the benefits are out of this world.

Excuse me but.....you need to speak for yourself and not others. I have no doubts that the bible is the word of God and that I am saved by my faith in Jesus Christ.

I pray that God help you see the truth of His son and His word, so that you may also live with assurance that you can trust Him.

Every one is atheist for that matter, some people dont dare to admit it.
By the way, its not my fault, if god shows up, i am ready to believe.
Its lack of evidence, i am not against god.
