Before we get any deeper into this, please note that just because a blank is the type rated for your drive, (This is usualy stated on the drive door) Does not mean all brands of that type of DVD will work. Some drives are VERY fussy as to what brands of media they will or will not burn. For example: I got a Sony Vaio laptop a few years back. It had a -R drive. It would not burn Sony DVD-R but would burn Imation and Memorex -R blanks just fine. Make sure about this first.
With that said, the integrated DVD/CD burning software in windows is very flawed. I have seen this many times.
You'd be far better off to disable the integrated burning code, by right clicking the drive in My Computer, click the recording tab and de-select Enable CD Recording.
Now install some basic CD/DVD recording software. You may already have a version of NERO or SONIC(tm) Record Now on your pre installed software. If not, don't despair. Chances are you have a friend that has a burning program they could lend you or download one of the free burning programs from the net. If you go the download route, do a search ~free download burning software~. You'll get plenty of results to wade through. Read first. Some are free, some are crippled versions of pay ware, and others are time limited free trials. I encourage you to read reviews of downloaded products, before you try them.
One more thing. The DVD needs room to build it's file structure. If you are trying to burn files over 4.6gb, you need to use DVD Shrink to compress the video so it fits.
I hope this solves your problem. Good luck.

Use Nero. Go to "Make your own DVD Video", "Add Video files" and from there it is relatively straight forward. Good luck.
