My 17 week old mini dachshund puppy has a lot of dander. His groomer thinks he needs more vitamin E. Has anyone had similar problems and if so, did any particular food make a difference? Any other suggestions are also very welcome (i.e. shampoos, vitamins, etc.). He was treated for worms, but I am assuming they are gone now, so I don't think that can be the problem. I am going to have him rechecked in four weeks just in case. Thanks.

I would definately be putting your dog on Fish Oil with included Vit E, you may have to search around for a while to find a brand which has the both.

Dosage is 1 x Capsule per 10kgs of body weight.

After a month you'll see a wonderful result.

In addition I would be feeding a raw natural diet called BARF (do an internet search on it).

A shampoo or spray is faking it, a good coat comes from the inside....a healthy a dog.

I have a small shiny 15 week ols and we feed him Pedigree and an egg every blue moon.Sometimes it takes 2 to 3 times before they are completly worm free depending on several things. Please be sure to treat for whip worms regularly my friend just lost a 9 yr old due to whip worms and the stuff you by in the stores typically don't have treatment for whips so ask your vet how often you should get him treated for whips I watched this precious baby die a horrible sloww painful death and to think of ANY other dog anywhere just breaks my heart I hopeyou enjoy your new pup they are so sweet but a vet or a vet tech can give you a better answer than what I have,I just jumped on because of the whip worms and also do the heartworm preventive as well. Good Luck and your pup will shine again soon. It's dry inside and cold out so it could be weather related as well.God Bless

The best food for skin problems that I have found is Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice dry food. My lab had severe skin problems and this was the only food that kept it under control.

Also for bathing I would use only oatmeal based shampoos. They are much gentler on the skin and still leave the coat very shinny.

You can try the supplements with the omega-3 fatty acids, but I would try the shampoo and food first. The food can take up to a month to really see the difference, but the shampoo should help to jump start the process. Also, don't bath too often. Once a month should be plenty for a dog with dry skin.

good luck

Omega 3 supplements (fish oils) can help with dry skin and coat, but try to find what's causing it in the first place. Maybe he's being bathed too often or is sensitive to shampoo, maybe it's the dry indoor heat. Use a soap-free shampoo and an oatmeal conditioner (never use human products) and only bathe him when he smells, not more than once a week. A humidifier might help. Don't use any flea dips, shampoos, collars, or powders as these can be very irritating to sensitive skin, stick to Frontline or Advantage for that.

Overshampooing will probably not help your pup - I agree with the Vitamin E, and you may want to look into using Salmon Oil as a supplement.
I feed Wysong kibble and Prairie or Innova Evo (no grain) with about 1/2 teaspoon (-ish) of Salmon Oil in there. My new rescue pup was itchy when she first came here, and now she's fine. So check the ingredients of the food you're using (corn and grains at the top of the ingredients list might be the source of the problem) - here's a dog food link for you:

Well, I don't know about different dog foods, but one of my dogs had a similar problem a few years ago. We found that the only problem was that she had dry skin. We put a little olive oil in her food which we had been told improves the texture and amounts of oil in their coats. Also, I have heard that you can buy a "Skin So Soft" product through Avon and put it on your dog's coat. This will leave it very oily for a few days, but the oil will settle in and your dogs coat should be better. Hope this helps!

Eukanuba, eggs, adding olive oil, vitamin E supplements. Make sure you're using a gentle shampoo specifically for dog grooming, no human shampoo (it'll dry out his skin).

Feed your dog lots of eggs!! It will help it's coat more than anything I have ever tried. They also sell vitamins specifically for helping a dogs coat which you can buy at any pet store. If all else fails call the vet for recommendations.
