It can happen to ANYONE. BElieve me i never thought i'd suffer from anorexia/bulimia. It's not really genetic, though some people are more likely to get it if they've had family that have had it or if they've suffered from depression. But it really could happen to anyone, especially if someone is very unhappy about themselves. Also, if there's been a comment on their weight/apperance etc. they're more likely to develop it if it was a negative comment. BElieve me, i never thought it'd happen to me, but it did, and i'm working on recovery.

Threre's no one cause for anorexia. Biochemistry and genetics do play a major role, as do family dynamics, society and the persons basic personality. It tends to run in families, my mother, my aunt and I all have suffered or are suffreing from anorexia. And yes, it could happen to anyone, however, some people are more susceptible then others.

There are no definitive ideas about the causes of anorexia. I had a friend who suffered for years and as a resulot we are quite well versed on the subject. There have been cases where it seems almost to be caught- this is mostly true in private residential schools where being the thinnest and eating the least becomes important through peer pressure. It's also linked to depression which has links with genetics, my friend has since recovered but remains on anitdepressants, as is her mum and brother- all with very similar 'symtoms' of depression- it has a multitude of presentations. My friend reckons her anorexia was triggered as her mum seemed to approve of her trying to 'be good' in what she ate- her knowledge of dietting came from a background as a ballerina- again a common ground, as is gymnastics, for development of anorexia due to the need to be very slim. Thus it could be said that anorexics have certain tendancies towards anorexia- they often also have obsessive compulsive tendancies- such as Nikki who was in big brother, they tend to have exacting standards of themself in every area of life- school work, looks, etc, and then to be in a certain external influences; a ballet career, a group of friends with tendancies towards anorexia, particularly influenced by the media- there are heaps of internet sites to get 'internal strength' to stay slim, if that is what you want.

I wonder what made you ask the question. If for any reason whatsoever you think you fit the bill or someone you know does Please speak to your mum. It is most prevelent in young females and is usually triggered off by something unpleasant happening in your life but can happen to anyone male or female young or old. The signs to watch for are excessive exercising, cutting down on meals, going to the bathroom immediately after a meal and obvious weight loss, probably disguised by baggy clothes. Laxitive abuse is also another thing to look out for. Hope this helps without scaring you

Who is at risk for anorexia?
Approximately 95% of those affected by anorexia are female, but males can develop the disorder as well. While anorexia typically begins to manifest itself during early adolescence, it is also seen in young children and adults. In the U.S. and other countries with high economic status, it is estimated that about one out of every hundred adolescent girls has the disorder. Caucasians are more often affected than people of other racial backgrounds, and anorexia is more common in middle and upper socioeconomic groups. According to the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), an estimated 0.5 to 3.7% of women will suffer from this disorder at some point in their lives.
Many experts consider people for whom thinness is especially desirable, or a professional requirement (such as athletes, models, dancers, and actors) to be at risk for eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa.

I think some people argue that all mental illness is in some way genetic, so that would include anorexia.
Every case is different, but normally anorexics feel out of control about something and use their hold over food and their body as a way of stabilising themselves. The amount you eat you can control, seeing yourself get smaller and it being because of your actions is again a comforting control. The whole thing about skinny models and stars influencing young girls is sort of a side issue its the control that is vital.

It is most common in teenage girls. It is caused by an inability to see your true body image. People who have anorexia have low self esteem and self confidence and a distorted body image as mentioned. It is not genetic. And finally use the sign "check spelling" it will get you more answers and stop people like me correcting your spelling.
