First off it really comes down to you having to reach deep into your creative soul. You know that place where each artist goes when he really starts to pull up those great painting ideas.
No one can say what your city will look like. That is not what you need to be focusing on. you need to instead walk around you city and see it through your eyes. How YOU want to see it in the future. Everyone in your class is going to go to all the web sites of future cities, and copy them. Be the one who is original and just create what you see. Make a future city that you want. Not your teacher or the other students. What kind of city do you wish you lived in? Learning to be original is what true art is all about.

okay, here's the deal.... the good news is that there is no wrong painting for this type of assignment. No one has the ability to know what your city will look like and you didn't mention how far in the future you could go so it sounds to me like the sky's the limit! This sounds like a fun one to me! I studied painting and drawing in college and had projects like this one.... just close your eyes and let your imagination go wild. think about how your city looks now, how would you like it to look, what would you change? is it tomorrow or a thousand years from now? if it is tomorrow, look out your window and paint what you see.. if it is the distant future... dream it UP! Good luck, have fun!

Look at what has happened to your city in the recent past, how did it look 50 years ago, 25 years ago and now. What trend do you see? Are older buildings being replaced? With what? What style of building: boxes, dull, ornate, tall...of what materials? What have been the changes? See if you can identify how people dress, play and work...that will tell you the functionality of the buildings, and perhaps you can look ahead five years, 10 years, then 50 years...to determine how things WILL change.

Well, look at pictures of your town. Then on the buildings and places in your town, add a lot of curves! That tends to be the "futuristic" look, and you don't necessarily need to make them look like they are made of metal. Maybe even add a few things, like a futuristic park, or some more technology.

If it were me, I would paint the city in ruin. Everything we have made will be gone eventually. You may think it sounds morbid, but I think it's pretty cool: the unstoppable force of time.

This is the closest image I could find that resembles a skyline. http://www.cs.unca.edu/~boyd/touring/tour03/brazov/brazov.jpg

Maybe you can try making the buildings look newer. A different type of style. It doesn't have to be skyscrapers.

And it doesn't have to look like an American city.

Make it look like the way you would want to see it.
