I am currently paying the obscene amount of £96.50 per week for my London Travel card, and wondered if there was a better way to do it.

I work freelance though, so I never know when I'll be in London and therefore cannot take advantage of a monthly / annual travel card.

Get Oyster pre-pay. It works out cheaper if you don't travel every day.

Cheapest way leaving and coming back at peak hours is by National Express from Colchester to Victoria Coach Station (£10.30 return) then by tube to Shepherds Bush (£4.00 return with Oyster card). Total journey time is over 3hrs though. Personally I'd drive A12/M25 to Upminster and get the tube there. £7.00 return peak (with Oyster) + parking to Shepherds Bush. Overground train is just horrendous especially from Marks Tey. If you are travelling from Marks Tey return for £20 a day I doubt you'll beat it bar buying a motorbike.
