You can get a cleaning tape, which will be just like a regular VHS cassette containing either cleaning tape or brushes and cleaning fluids.

Most modern VCRs have automatic head cleaning systems, usually when you insert or eject a tape and advise against using any other cleaning procedures.

Best to check you instruction manual to be on the safe side.

You buy a VHS head cleaner tape, that has some type of cleaner inside it. You put the head cleaner tape in, press play, and it should stop when it's done. Take it out, keep it, because it's good to use so many times. Use it for each 40 hrs. of playing time on your VCR.

If you are ok with taking the case off it use mentholated spirits and a cotton bud, otherwise go and buy a head cleaning tape, but the metho works the best
