Alright, it all depends. If you want to do a tandem (this is where you are strapped on to somebody and you "go along for the ride"), it all depends on how comfortable the tandem instructor is with flying with you. If your tandem instructor is a little guy, he might not be comfortable flying witha bigger guy (the tandem instructor has to feel like it is safe to fly, and that he can maneuver the two of you properly in the air). A bigger sized tandem instructor might feel more comfortable jumping with a bigger sized guy.

If you want to go by yourself and have your own parachute, a bigger person can safely maneuver a bigger parachute. However, do take into account that during your certification class you will have to fly with two instructors, and if they are considerably smaller, they may not be able to keep up with your fall rate (speed). Your instructors have to feel like they are able to stay with you during the jump- if they aren't with you, they can't see you, and won't be there in case you need any assistance. Again, a personal decision.

Both of these concepts have to do with wing loading (parachute size relative to the jumper's size). Obviously, bigger canopies can hold bigger people.

I would reccommend, if you want to go on a skydive, phoning a dropzone or looking them up on the internet and asking them (or check in the FAQ section) what the weight limit for that dropzone is. I know at the one that I go to, the general rule of thumb is no more than 250 pounds.

Good luck, and Have fun!

PS- It is definitely worth loosing the extra pounds for, it is the most incredible experience of your life! I started skydiving about 7 months ago and I lost 18 pounds without even realizing it!!! No diet or anything! Definitely a life-changing activity.

My husband is a skydiver. You can e-mail me and I can ask, he's sleeping right now, sorry. But cannot be too heavy, that's for sure. Hope I can help you with your skydiving questions in the future. For more info go to xtremedivers.com.

God bless you :)

i'm no parachuter, yet thinking the militia drops extensive issues out of planes and helicopters, i could think of the only ingredient is the size of the chute to the size/weight of the guy.

I'm no parachuter, but considering the military drops huge things out of planes and helicopters, I'd think the only factor is the size of the chute to the size/weight of the person.

there isnt really a limit because anyone can do it and the parachute probably has enough pressure to hold even a 500lb person. it all depends on timing because if u have the right timing and u do it at the right altitude then u just get it right.
