both ways. listening to what a person say, u can tell how is his outlook in life and his disposition i.e. melancholy, positive, etc.
what others say about him is a probably more like a 3rd party view or confirmation about that person. if u think from the conversation that he is ...., if its consistent, others should hold the same view that he is also ....

Yes, if he shows negativity about others. That is not a good thing but you can't determine a person's worth until you get to know the person deep down. We all have our faults and it's a give and take, not souly what the person say.

VERY TRUE. A person who demeans others behind their back is likely to be doing the same to you. A person who has deep respect for others might often be criticized because they don't go along with the crowd. I've heard the talk behind my back and people who really get to know me, know I really care about things deeply.

It depends how and where you hear it. Because sometimes it will work and sometimes it doesn't. But most of the time it all depends wioth the personality and character of a person is a good way to find out about someone.

I totally agree, its a state of mind and if he picks and see the good in others he will likely do the same to you, and vice versa.
