Yes, you can use your debit card just like a credit card if it has the symbol in the corner saying it's a Visa/MC/Discover. However DON'T do this!! NEVER use your debit card to make online purchase. There is no protection for you if something happens with that account. Remember this card is you checking account. Someone can drain the funds from it and then what?! You have nothing. If you use a Visa and someone makes an unauthorized purchase you have protection. You won't be responsible for it. If you order something and never receive it, you call up Visa and they will make the company send you the goods. If they don't you don't pay for it. You are credited the charges. With the debit card......too bad. They already have the money right out of your checking.

Get a card that is just for making online purchases. If you have poor credit and can't get a credit card, then look into getting a secured account. Which means you open it with $500 cash. Then you have $500 credit limit. You still have the protection of the regular credit cards. No goods, no pay and so on.

Did I mention DON'T use a debit card for online purchase???

I'd agree that all SHOULD be well if it's Visa or some other well known variety.
However, at a hotel of a major group in Amsterdam my Visa debit card was not recognised last December. And there it was not a case of insufficient funds. At the time I didn't have a credit card, but I did have enough cash.
Since then, the very same card has been accepted at hotels of the same group in both Paris and Munich.
But I do have a credit card as back-up now.
To summarise, be prepared for a debit card to be turned down, irrespective of respectability.

As long as your debit card has the symbol of a major credit card on the front of it, then there should be no problem with using it online. I used my debit card to book hotels in Ireland last fall without a problem. I also took it to Ireland with me, and used it quite a bit.

VISA debit cards would be acceptable all over the world, however things like Switch might not be.

Switch is now Maestro and this is acceptable throughout Europe, but I don't thing it is in the US.

So, the short answer is... it depends.

No most sites require credit cards, sorry. You used to be able to use those pre-paid visa card you bought from Walmart but some sites don't accept those anymore.

high risk on the fly credit
ie: gambling etc
is usually credit card only
the companys are guaranteed payment
if u get carried away and spend more than you can afford.
debit card has too many limitations
on the way you can spend money
and the way these companys retrieve money
they do not want to mess about recuperating
monies owed them
they want it there and then
no matter what.
