hi, my brother and i live togethter and last year we let a local tax guy fill our taxes out. however he put both of us as head of household and ruined my taxes as the house etc is not in my name evn though i pay half of everything through direct transfer from my account to my brothers every month. now i pay the irs $200 a month.what can i do to better my situation?

Send a letter to the tax preparer and let him know about the situation. I would consider notifying the state agency that governs his profession as well.

Pay the IRS or they will make life difficult for you.

I would consider another way to pay for the house. If you are 50% owner you need a new mortgage. One with you as the borrower as well. If you are not part owner of the house, then you shouldn't have taken the interest deduction and obviously shouldn't in the future.

Owning a home does not make you "Head of Household". Paying over 1/2 the cost of the home in which your qualifying child lives gives you HOH status. If you don't have a child then you are not HOH even if you pay all the household costs.

I see no reason why you can't file an amended tax return . If the original is incorrect, why wouldn't you want to change it? There's no penalty for correcting a mistake.

Nothing much.. make sure you double check your tax return when getting it prepared. If the refund sounds to good, it probably is. Keep on making your payments and good luck.
