I'm off snowboarding on Friday to France. I have booked my 6 year old son in for skiing lessons with the ESF (all day lessons). I am now having second thoughts about it. I think he will get all sore and achey and tired and want to give up. Does anyone have experience of taking a child this young skiing? I have seen loads of other kids ski that are younger than 6, but worry about the stamina of my own. Please help! Do you think he will be ok? I know you don't know him, so no smart answers please.

You've done all the right things. Getting him a skiing lesson is your best one. It's a little less frustrating for kids to get introduced to sliding down a hill on skis then a board. After he falls in love with the speed and freedom of the slopes then let him make a choice.
It's part of a ski instructors job to make the experience fun, safe, and educational. All you can do now is to make sure that he has the proper clothing.
Have fun and enjoy the slopes with your son.

Of course, not all kids are the same. I started at 4, my two sisters at 3, my own two daughters both started at 3. Granted, at the age of 3, they don't last more than 15 minutes to half an hour. But 6? Unless you have been sheltering him from experiencing inconveniences such as temperature extremes, and the ability to listen to an instructor (such as in school), then he should be fine. Most 6 yo's are extremely versatile.

Plus, as a former ski instructor, I can assure you that the ski schools are very experienced, and know when to go and when to relax. Don't expect the ski school to be driving your child up and down the mountain all day. They will take lunch and cocoa breaks, relax inside, play games in the snow, etc. At that age, it is more about having fun than "skiing".

They will also likely have day care, so if he only lasts a half day, then he could go there.

I just realized this. It is Saturday now, you are probably gone already. Well, hope you enjoyed the trip, and your son too!

I have a 3 year old sister, and we can't get her off the mountain! I started skiing when I was 3 myself. I don't think that all day is necessarily the best way to start your son off. If they offer a half day program, I think that would be better. I started off with half days, and then my dad took me out himself in the afternoon. I didn't get too tired from the lesson at the ski school, but by about 3:00 in the afternoon, I was ready for a nap! My sister did this "Ski with Me" lesson in which she had a private instructor, but my dad went with them as well. The instructor taught my dad techniques to teach my sister how to ski.

See what your son thinks. He probably knows what he wants to handle by now.

Have fun!

Are you kidding? A six year old has seemingly unbounding energy to be out in the snow!

If he actually tells you he doesn't like it after a few days, maybe give him a day off...but I would bet a lot that he's gonna LOVE skiing.

he will want to stay and ski more if anything! the first time i went skiing i did not want to stop at the end of the day. yes your son will be fine, this also alows him to have a sense of his own freedom. he will have a great time so do not worry.
