The term 'derby' is used to describe many races restricted to three year old horses. As mentioned above, the most famous West Coast Derby is the Santa Anita Derby, a major prep for the Kentucky Derby. Golden Gate runs the El Camino Real Derby in early spring which is also a stopping point on the Kentucky Derby trail. Del Mar, Hollywood Park and Bay Meadows all run their Derbies on the turf.

But the major race for three year old American horses is the Kentucky Derby which attracts runners from both Coasts, the Midwest, Europe, Dubai, Japan and Canada. California based horses do quite well year in an year out. Fifteen Kentucky Derby winners prepped in the Santa Anita Derby. California bred horses have won three times - Morvich, Swaps and Decidedly and most recently finished second by a nose with Cavonnier in 1996.

The short answer is yes. There is an important prep race for the KY Derby called the Santa Anita Derby, but it does not replace the Derby.

The quality of the 3 year old horses in California vary from year to year, usually they get dissed by the NY or KY racing fans, but sometimes they are better. The difficulty of handicapping the Derby is that, very often the horses from Cali and the horses from KY and the horses from NY may not have ever faced each other before the Derby.

Horses based in Cali that have won the Derby in recent years include Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Giacomo, Charismatic.

Any three year old Thoroughbred horse registered with The Jockey Club is eligible to enter the Kentucky Derby. However, only the twenty horses with the highest earnings prior to the Derby are allowed to start in the race.

Let's not forget the horses who come from South America and the Far East, either !!! Any thoroughbred from anywhere on the planet can be entered in the Kentucky Derby- so long as the horse is the right age, and is registered with the Jockey Club of either the US, Britain, Canada, or one of the other branches of it that exist elsewhere.
