Rumor has it that Dana White offered a contract to entice Couture out of retirement. Dana knew how weak the heavyweight division was and needed someone notable to fight Sylvia . I think Couture does have a good fight left him in and also think that if he does beat Sylvia he may retire again leaving the heavyweight title open. This would allow Dana to get some great heavyweight matches to build up to a heavyweight title fight. Probably Cro-cop v. Herring. I don't see Liddell leaving the light-heavyweight division especially with Rampage in the picture now.

If the UFC wants to be known as the premier mixed martial arts organization, they shouldn't keep pulling fighters out of retirement or near retirement to face the champions. I haven't seen one good fight come from this strategy. Shamrock got creamed by Franklin and Hughes v. Gracie was a joke. Sylvia v. Couture should be more interesting than the previous two, but the result will be the same. Even if Couture gets the Mainiac to the ground, Sylvia trains with one of the best camps in the sport. I'm sure he'll be prepared for anything the Natural will bring at him, and eventually get the knockout. I wish Brandon Vera had resigned, as he has a solid chance of taking down Sylvia before the belt falls into the hands of CroCop. What's up with the guy complaining about Anderson Silva? He wrecked Rich Franklin and Mike Swick should have gotten a shot? Mark my words, Anderson Silva will wreck Mike Swick too!

Basically, Randy had the itch to return. After being a champion in two different divisions, it was probably hard for him to watch the fights without getting the urge to fight again, especially when he thinks he's a better fighter than the current champ.

Randy was right. When he made the decision to come out of retirement, the heavyweight division was really weak. Tim had the belt and was poorly fighting by playing it to safe. Andrei and Tim have already fought 3 times, so he can't fight for the belt. Frank Mir has been fighting horrible since he returned from his accident. Who's left Jeff Monsoon?? Please. (Although, I do think Cheick Kongo is tough and would like to see him get a title shot.)
(UFC has also gotten Heath Herring and Cro Cop now, but they didn't have them at the time Randy decided to return.)

Randy still thinks he's at the top of his game and has a few great fights left in him and like everybody else he sees that Sylvia is highly beatable. It's good for the UFC also, picture this Couture beats Sylvia then Liddell moves to heavyweight to challenge him for the title. If Liddell takes the title that sets up a Liddell/ Cro Cop Mega Fight and what UFC fan wouldn't pay to see that! All of a sudden the Heavyweight division is exciting again. Love him or hate him Dana is one smart dude.

When you have fought like he has and for that many years you to would probably come back as well. He may have some beef with sylvia also . He does look alot better and I believe it's going to be one hell of a fight.

I see some answers, but they are all wrong. It's about chedda, scratch, paper, gouda, money, any other reason is krap. These older guys like Gracie, Couture, Shamrock are responsible for building up MMA, the problem is back then it did'nt pay well, but now the sport is popular and guys like Dana White are responsible to honor these guys with the paydays they deserve. Plus there just old warriors and they don't mind going out there and getting beat on. These guys are prize fighters, they're not going out there for free.

So he can get a legit hvywght to fight Mirko.
too bad fighting Cro Cop will probably end Randys career. Look at the older fighter who come back after being out of the game, they get beat pretty bad and Mirko is dangerous!

Dana sucks too!!!!!!!!!!!
