To be frank don't get too attached to your grandkids.
The simple answer is that we don't know for sure what is happening, but the evidence collected over many years points towards the fact that climate change is caused or contributed to by us humans.
The question is do we sit back and and hope that the scientists were wrong and nothing happens or do start to take action now to improve conditions for the future as well as reducing the pollution we breathe in and eat.
Historians of the next civilization (if there is one) will either wonder why we took so long to change what we were doing or why we did not bother to do anything at all given the evidence we have in hand.

Well, during the medieval warm period it was up to 3°C warmer than it is today, and it caused mankind to become extinct...
... oh no, wait. That can't be right, can it? We're still here.
All joking aside, global warming is just the latest in a long line of "catastrophe" scares. Us humans love them! Whether it's overpopulation, global cooling, the Y2K bug, avian flu, the tragic loss of species, the collapse of ecosystems, poisoning by pesticides, alar on apples, falling sperm counts from endocrine disrupters, cancer from power lines, cancer from saccharine, cancer from mobile phones, cancer from computer screens, cancer from food colouring, hair spray, electric razors, electric blankets, coffee, chlorinated water, etc, etc, - all scares that proved to be nothing to worry about.
And the latest, greatest scare? Global Warming (cue scary music!)
As I said above, the medieval warm period was up to 3°C warmer than it is today, and far from just "surviving" it, we *flourished*!
Think on this; the Amazon rain forest has more species of life than anywhere else on the planet. And as far as average temperatures go, would you consider the Amazon rain forest to be a hot place, or a cold place?
And what part of the planet has the least life? The equatorial deserts? Nope, it's the poles. The north pole is the most lifeless place on Earth.
This is because, as far as life is concerned, warmer is generally better.
It's entirely possible that we'll actually be, net, better off with global warming. Growing seasons will be longer, for example, so we'll have more and cheaper food. But you never hear *that* on the news, do you?
Rather than swallowing everything the global warming alarmists feed you, try looking at both sides of the debate.
This would be a good start…

And I highly recommend you read his notes and references too. It's very interesting to read how we are being mislead.

According to an announcement this week by the global warming "Chicken Littles" global warming is irreversible and will continue for the next thousand years no matter what we do.
So I guess we can all stop talking about this bull crap and just start living our "best-and-most-prosperous-in human-history" lives again.

I find this wryly amusing.
I was listening to a radio interview with the Indian Finance misister in the early hours of Saturday morning, GMT. His claim about ignoring the effects of Global warming is that this is how the West developed during "Victorian Times", therefore India has a "right" to do the same (by burning lotsa fossil fuels).
The poulation of India is currently about one billion. At current growth rates, it will be 1.4 billion by 2025. They have a "right" to do this in their own eyes, because we did. We have learned the error of our ways, but it won't affect them, because they have the "right".
Same probably goes for China, I guess.
The planet will continue, no doubt. The human race? Screwed already - don't bother being eco-friendly, because the really populous nations don't care - you cannot fart against thunder. If you don't already have kids, don't bother - they're gonna die before their rightful time. If you encounter a specimen of an endangered species, kill it and eat it - it may be your last meal and you might be able to make a fast buck outta selling the hide. Or horns. Or hands. Or, or, or.
Also look into "global dimming". We've got 23 years left, kiddies, that's all. We know what to do about it, but we won't do it - not collectively. Choose a religion now, if you think it'll help (it won't).
The only thing you can do is this: next time there's a "MAJOR CATASROPHE" like famine, tsunami, earthquake - laugh in their faces when they ask you for one dollar/pound/euro - they did it to themselves and they're doing it to us at the same time.

Yes of course we will (survive I mean) and civilisation will just continue evolve. I think that with reduced resources, the continued development will slow down rather than speed up (for a good number of years). Of course, I am speculating (as you are) and have no well informed evidence to back my theory up.

Things has started to change since many years ago
More deserts, less fresh water, more hurricanes and tiffons, less productive land, etc.
More respiratory tract deceases, more digestive tract, more allergies, etc.
More infections (aids, sars, aviar flu, ebola, etc.)
It will happen more and more. And new effects will appear.
Yes, we will survive, but we are paying the price of what we did. And we and future generations will pay the price of what we do.
It is free market. But terms of payment for Nature Corp. bills are within 50 years, or longer, interests and taxes will be included.

I've always thought global disaster would be the precursor to international socialism, but in all likelihood only the rich and powerful will survive and they'll just carry on in their idiotic ways. Ho hum.
