Depending on the shades of brown, if it is a light tan or beige the you might want a deep garnet or golden color.
With mid browns, beige or pumpkin colors might set the stage for an autumn theme.
For dark browns try a beige or the robins egg blues that they have been showing so much of.

Beige or tan carpeting will go with just about anything. It is almost neutral. Depending upon the shade of brown your couch is, a green or gold might also work.

Are the walls staying white? I would choose a rug in earth tones, such as tan, dark beige tone, or taupe. I'd choose window treatments to compliment, either the sofa or the rug, in a softer tone. I may paint one smaller wall a contrasting bright color that goes well with rug, and drapes. I would have accessories with the contrast wall color and a bit of the other colors in them,(pillows, throws, area rug, etc.)
