That statement was made by a chaplain in 1942 according to my book of quotations.
I used to be a Eucharistic Minister of the Catholic Church. We gave communion to the sick and dying. I can tell you for a fact that so-called atheists when in a life threatening situation always asked for a priest. That's of course my personal experience, there might be exceptions.
Have a blessed day

Been in any good foxholes recently? Didn't think there was much call for front line time in the catering corps.
As for atheists? Well, I know a few people who lost their faith in God, in foxholes. Not too many who found Him, quite a number who found comfort and strength in Him, and far, far too many who in all likelihood went to join him.

This is a figure of speech that stems from those fighting in the World Wars.
Of course I am sure that it is not "strictly" true - they must be some atheists who remain so whatever the circumstance, but I think it was a reflection that many people when faced with the direct fear of death, resorted to religion/God for comfort - a last minute plea so to speak.
However, God is merciful, and he does accept last minute pleas. So if you want to accept Him, he is more than willing. He is the best friend you will ever have.

There is nothing like the threat of death or war to cause men to turn to God.
How crowded the churches were on the Sunday morning after 9-11!!
But an atheist is one who doesn't believe God exists. The bible says that the devil believes in God. So to believe in God only puts people in the same category as the devil. Not very good company to keep.
What God wants are people who not only believe but obey His word.
god bless

I was one. Sorry to interrupt the fantasy.
Hey I just looked it up. The military actually has more atheists than the general population. Page 25 Fig 5 of this report says that it is 21% non-religious. That is 1 in 5. http://www.prb.org/Template.cfm?Section=Population_Bulletin1&template=/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm&ContentID=12460

That's an argument against foxholes. Not an argument against atheism.

Many more times than we could ever imagine, people facing their imminent mortality have an "epiphany".

When people are terrified they cry for their deceased mothers who can no longer help them, make deals with the devil, bargains with the enemy.
If my daughter were dying I would do anything....say anything...pay anything to save her.
Natural human instinct.

When you stop asking your imaginary friend for help in times of trouble, that's when you know you are an atheist...and an adult.
