I'm interested because i'm trying to get fit, and I can do 5 miles in just under 12 and a half minutes. Does anybody know what the proper time should be for an average person? or even a professional?

I've got one of those resistance things where you twist it (being a student, can't exactly splash out on an expensive model) but it's reasonably high. (Compared to real cycling i'd say, it's like going up a 15-30 degree slope. I gave it a proper go on the bike and got 5 miles done in just under 10 and a half minutes. So should i be aiming at about 9 minutes then.

(_)iiiiD: If you could read then you would have taken note, that this is on an exercise bike... not a real bike! and I don't know how much you know about exercise bikes, but they don't move... so it wouldn't be on the road. I suggest you do a bit of exercising yourself... your brain. Think before you open your mouth. FOOL

K, the degrees thing is wrong, i dunno wot the resistance is cos it's just a twisty thing. 5 miles takes on average for me about 12 minutes, averaging at about 25mph. The tour de france racers race at about 30mph, but then dnt forget they are on terrain and racing a lot further than 5 miles.

If your trying to get fit your best to go longer rather than faster. You will burn more fat and build condition if you can stay on the machine for a greater period of time.
The best pace to train at, to gain fitness, is your aerobic threshold. This is best described as the pace that you pant(It is difficult to hold a conversation but you are not gasping). This is around 70-75% of your maximum heart rate.(for those that insist on heart rate monitors).
Aerobic threshold training targets you circulatory system Increasing the volume of blood that can be pumped around. Increased blood flow means the muscles can work harder.
As your fitness improves you will be able to output more power at this same pant pace. On a bicycle your speed will increase.Be patient this is a slow process.
As a guide a reasonably fit rider should be able to maintain a speed of around 20 mph and stay within their aerobic threshold.
As far as the bull goes Speeds of greater than 30 mph are quite possible by average riders but only over short distances. (5 miles is a short distance). A steep grade is considered anything over 10% or 5.7 degrees. I think there was a little bit that touched a 13% grade in one stage of Le tour last year.

If you're going 30mph up a 15-30% grade, you're either dreaming or on a motorcycle. On the road, average riders might go 15-18 mph, which would be about 12-15 minutes for 5 miles. Even in the Tour de France flat stages, they don't average much more than 27-28 mph, and that's with drafting off each other.

About 10 days ago I bought a new bike to get back into it all. Back in the day (about 10 years ago) I did 10 miles a day on canal towpaths, as fast as possible (usually took me about 30 mins from home to home again). I did this every weekday between work and dinner. At weekends I did a 50 mile or so ride every weekend, with sunday as a god given day of rest. Today I managed about 5 miles before my legs threatened to strike, so take it slow and build up to more. Basically just go as far as you can until you've had enough, and every couple of days push yourself a bit further! Remember - no pain, no gain.

For the people who average 30 mph, consider entering the Tour de France!

I would say you are slow if you want to be a professional but you are going about the average speed right now. Good luck and keep up the good work.
