If there is a problem here, it is not with prayer.
It is with attitude.
Prayer is not about begging, or whining.
It is about love.
Prayer can be used for the purpose of thanking and showing appreciation, not just aking.
You are obviously not a father.
Any parent, even knowing what their child may be about to say (or ask) will, on occasion leave it to the child to show initiative and take the lead in conversation.
You may wish to concentrate a bit on humility, instead of prayer.

Examining prayers from many religious traditions shows that often, when we pray, we are in some profound sense talking to ourselves. For when we humans stop listening to the song of all of the natural world, when we close our ears to the voices of the trees and stars and water and earth and animals and stones, all we have left to listen to are our own voices, and those voices all too often speak of pain and injustice and loss and terror.
And so our prayers become supplications to a Power from which we feel estranged, begging that Power to make things different than they are.
But prayer does not have to be an expression of our limitation and frailty. We can transcend our preoccupation with our small concerns, and experience the universe with awe and wonder. We can listen to the powerfully prayerful voices of other living beings and know those voices to be our own. We can enter into a relationship with what is sacred through every thing in the universe, and allow it's grandeur and beauty to move us to thankfulness.
Prayers of thanksgiving and praise are for OUR sakes, not the sake of the Divine Source. When our prayers list the wonders of the natural world, they are not groveling attempts to flatter a Creator of uncertain temper, but rather they serve to remind us of the marvels that exist all around us, and with which we are blessed, whether we "deserve" them or not.
They help us to see what is really here - a mystery and a miracle that cannot be simplistically defined, that cannot be contained. Such prayers help to hold us in the attitude of attitude of wonder that is characteristic of the spiritual life.

of course god knows what we want .
prayer is more to affirm in our own minds our wants needs ,
there is also that of praying for others the going the extra step of asking god for assistance strength ,as well as the switching off of our mind from obsessing about a given problem .
there is a humbling not a whinning about prayer
prayer is a mantra as much as a means to get help ,say thanks ,showeing care for others
never assume ,be humble ,be true
often we know not how petty a request we really are making to the most high till we speak it out loud.
god does know our thought before we form the request but we need to at least be willing to humble ourselves as well have the decency to respectfully ask for that we need.

You seem to think that prayer is only for when we need or want something from God.
It's not. Prayer can also be -- and should also be -- for praising God, and for thanking Him for His presence and His blessings.
When I give a gift to someone I know well, I know that they appreciate the gift. I know they're thankful for it. Even if they don't say so.
But it's still nice to hear them say it, don't you think? It's the kind of thing that keeps relationships (of any kind) going.
Or, liken it to a husband and wife who tell each other "I love you.' They already know. They know that their spouses love them. But if they never said it, it would eventually wear down on the marriage.
God doesn't need our prayers. But we do. It keeps our relationship with Him strong. If we never prayed to Him, it would be too easy for us to forget Him.

Well, I have asked myself that question for the last 50 years or so.
The best thing I can surmise is that it is a way for us to review our day, think of the mistakes we made, and confess them to God, and ask God to help us not make those mistakes tomorrow.
Of course, while we are chatting with God, it is always a convenient time to ask for him to give us and our friends and even our enemies "good health and happiness"
I think praying for enemies is a pretty good way of getting them off of our back. If they are healthy and happy they might not be so enthusiastic about hurting us. (It seems unhealthy people are cranky people.)
just a thought --

Prayer is necessary because it helps to bulid a relationship with God.
There are different kinds of prayer and so it does not always constitute requests.children talk to their parents to seek their guidance on different issues and only to talk about their needs or make demands. Prayer therefore is more about interacting with God

God is the creator,He knows every thing about us.By asking His mercy and blessings we show that we have no strength to solve our problems. We pray and He guides us to the right path.By His help we cannot do any thing in this world. Our praying and remembering Him shows our love for Him.If all our needs are fulfilled than no one will remember God or be thankful for His blessings.

Because prayer isn't only about our needs it's about the relationship with God. He wants us to desire him, seek him out and love him.
Prayer has amazing power and effect. It molds you into the person you were originally called to be.

You're right.
When you were a child, you never asked for something, did you? I mean, if you saw a brand red bicycle, your parents would instantaneously know and buy it for you. Won't they? After all, they are you parents! Why would your be begging to them?
Hope you got your answer
