in ancient times they would be built facing Jerusalem, nowadays it doesn't matter. Jerusalem, because it is the place of death and Resurrection of Christ the Lord.

I was going to say that it doesn't matter, they can face any direction, but most of those I've attended faced north. That is, the entry doors faced north and the wall behind the altar faced south. The only reason I can think of for this is that the sun takes a southward arc in this (the northern) hemisphere and that would tend to illuminate the stained glass in that direction.

Many Christian churches have an eastern orientation (in that if you're facing the altar you are facing east) but it is not a strict rule or requirement.
St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, probably the most famous church in the world, faces west.

While in Israel a few years ago, I was told that churches (particularly their altars) were built to face east towards the rising sun. As said by someone previous - all the resurrection accounts speak of the empty tomb being found as the Sun was coming up - and so the rising Sun has become a symbol of the risen Son

The front of a Christian church faces toward the road, the back toward the parking lot.
It faces the city that it's in or nearest to, so that people can see it and come in.

When you're standing in a Catholic church facing the altar, you're always facing east.
It's because the sun rises in the east, and the rising of the sun is symbolic of the Resurrection.

They face the North Pole. If Christians are really good and don't sin for at least six months then Santa kills an Athiest.
