I'd stick with XP. It's all nice and patched up and you don't need a "Ferrari" for a computer to run it. All that eye candy really takes its toll on system resources, and after all, why do you have a computer anyway? To run software, or to say "Oooooh" "Aaaaah" at the fading menus and visual effects?

Haven't you asked this before? First run the Microsoft tool to see if your computer will accept Vista. Chances are it won't, if it's more than a year old. XP is a proven operating system that's been in use for 3+ years now. Vista is just on the market with a lot of holes, bugs and things yet to be worked out. A year from now, Vista will be a good operating system. Right now, it's a crap shoot!

There many versions of Vista, the top is called Ultimate.
Its depending on youre PC and iff you have one older then maximum 2 years ago you better stick with XP till you upgrade youre PC with a new one.
You can start with a Vista baisc and upgrade to ultimate as well, with downloads.

Ultimately, I suspect Vista.... but I would wait a year so Microsoft can work all the bugs out!
