What is your opinion on all the SIDS do's and donts?
Is all this information just making parents more scared and panicky? Babies still die from SIDS even though the parents have done everything they were told to prevent it.
Is SIDS really about laying babies on their back or is it something else?
Most people were laid on their bellies as babies and still made it.
I was taught to lay babies on their bellies and none of the children I baysat died.

What do you think? How were you raised to lay babies down?
Is SIDS caused wholly by how how the baby sleeps or is it just a horrible thing that happens no matter what you do?

I really believe SIDS will happen no matter what when I had my daughter who is now 7 I was told by the profesionals to lie her on her side now they are telling mothers today to lie them on thier back, If you ask me its all just the medical professionals way of saying in a polite way We dont know what in the world causes SIDS but we'll keep changing the babies position. By the way when she was two months we lied her on her stomach and she was atually more comfortable and slept better

A young baby with no neck control can suffocate when put to sleep on their stomach & that is considered a sids death. Nobody knows for sure what sids is or why it happens but they do know that doing 'certain things' reduces sids rates by about 75%. SIDs is well researched & they can give statistics but they still don't really understand what it is.

I think there is "SIDS" and SIDS.

"SIDS" are deaths related to positioning, blankets, toys, etc. These babies could potentially be aroused if they were sleeping with a breathing monitor.

Then there is "SIDS" which is caused by sleep apnea. Sleep apnea can be a condition on its own. It is also aggrevated/caused by by being sick, vaccines (some), dust, allergies, and potentially fumes from flame retardant mattresses.

Then there is the real SIDS. A mom in my parenting group had a baby die of SIDS, during the day, in her arms and she is qualified in infant CPR. The baby just stopped. In these cases SIDS is like old age, the body just ceases to function, all of it, all at once. And nothing is going to bring them back.

Then there is the potential Vitamin C link. Which I found at least plausable enough to make me increase my vitamin C intake while nursing. I had increased it during pregnancy because it is shown to prevent premature rupture of the amniotic sac.

"There is a theory that vitamin C deficient acute infantile scurvy is the prime cause of SIDS. This has been proposed by a Dr. Archie Kalokinos of Australia. He wrote a book about this in 1974 in Australia; the US edition was published in 1981 by Keats Publishing of New Canaan, Connecticut. The book is called "Every Second Child". The claim is that daily Vitamin C supplementation to the mother from the time of conception onward will prevent SIDS in the baby. This theory was publicized (poorly) in the late 1970's in the US by way of a nationwide tour by the two Australian doctors involved in this research (Kalokerinos & Dr. Glen Dettermann). They also went to the NIH and were not well received.

Last year, I was contacted by a physician in Mexico who told me SIDS had disappeared in his village after he began to administer Vitamin C to all the pregnant women in his village and to the newborns after birth.

To date I know of no data to support these claims."

"Back to sleep" That's the saying, lay your child on it's back for sleeping. Babies have their own reflexes laying on their backs, so if they throw up in their sleep, their heads turn to the side so they don't choke on it.
SIDS doesn't just happen sleeping in a crib, sometimes kids are sitting up playing with toys and just die on the spot. I don't think you can totally prevent SIDS. It just happens. Do all you can to help prevent it, but not all SIDS deaths are during sleep.

babies should always be laid on their backs to sleep. Since this became the normal practice the amount of babies that died of SIDs dropped in half. That's alot.

If they are on their bellies they rebreathe the same air over and over and it can cause them to "forget" to breathe causing SIDs

If I found out anyone babysitting my child was laying him on his belly to sleep I would have a FIT. It would definitely be the last time you babysat for me.

my 3 month old nephew died from sids. they woke up and he was blue. it ruined their family. the doctor said he had an infection in his intestines, still accusations flew. i myself always worried about that same thing. i slept beside all 3 of my children when they were babies. i got alot of flack from it but in other countries that dont have the luxuries we do, the families have to sleep together in the same room. i would do research and a keep close eye on your baby. most of all ask God for protection!
