Steam distillation can be done at home, but be aware that you are going to get very little essential oil and a lot of hydrosol. Home stills are available for purchase, but if you are handy and so inclined...you can build your own. The idea is that plant material and water are boiled, the steam is captured and condensed and allowed to collect in another vessel. A large pot with a lid that fits well so that the steam is only allowed to escape through a hole that is fitted with tubing that travels through a cold water bath or ice. (This is where the steam condenses to fluid) This 'water' is collected in a vessel, mostly hydrosol with the essential oil floating on the top.

This web site shows how to buy the parts and set up an essential oil distiller, but if you have access to some laboratory glassware you can set one up on your own.
