I'd say male, my brother's name is Sean

I've never heard of a female Sean (or Shaun) but have heard of Seana / Shauna

In Ireland it's purely male and is the Gaelic way of saying John. But in the last 30 years, Americans have made it a unisex name.

In the USA, mostly male but some females. Some parents spell it "Shawn", out if ignorance or because they want people to pronounce it properly.
