The police station is not a lost and found. The police are not baby sitters and not there to silence barking dogs, tell your children to do their homework, do what you say, or to check on the welfare of your neighbor/mother/sister/friend/assigned case (if you are a CPS or Adult Protective Services caseworker). They are not civil enforcement. They are not there to kill the snake in your yard, catch the stray dog running loose in the neighborhood, etc.

However, everyone seems to think the police are there personal slaves -- there to do their bidding.

The police are really there for one reason (whether the city/county/municipality acknowledges it or not) only -- to enforce the law. That is why they are called law enforcement.

If you want someone to coddle you and kiss your butt, look elsewhere -- these guys have a really tough, dangerous job and deal with dangerous, beligerant, rude,and/or ignorant people multiple times daily. Many times people just want to file complaints to try to get out of whatever criminal trouble they are in.

If you are afraid of the police, it is most likely because you are guilty of something or didn't do what they told you to do at one time or another and the encounter turned into an unpleasant situation.

Remember, the police are the ones that respond when you need help -- treat them with respect and they will treat you the same way.

Yes very much, it is easier said than done.
As there cannot be a 100% good situation so is difficult to achieve a 0% bad situation. In democratic countries, if the citizens do not want any "good practice " to be part of public life, the police just cannot enforce it by remaining polite and friendly. Corruption and exploitation are the two ends of a socio-economic situation and these two ends threads the powerful and the weak. In a given situation, the weak tries to corrupt the powerful by taking advantage of his/her weakness, similarly the powerful exploits the weak by hitting at his vulnerability. Yes we all should direct our efforts so that corruption and exploitation tends towards 0% situation and if we can do it, it would be a world full of happiness and goodness.

Now making of a people friendly police is a different aspect, it needs sensitisation of the police towards human right violations of all kind, a change of mindset is required for being polite in public life including policing. All citizens expect polite and courteous reception at public offices so why single out the police alone. Police also comes from the common man, and the policemen reflects the prevalent attitude and mindset of the society. If we want police to be polite the common man and the ploice has to work together for law enforcement and good practices.

As it was said before... it only takes a couple bad apples to make the entire orchard look bad.

I'm sorry if you had a bad experience with a member of your Police Department. Perhaps the person you are speaking of was a jerk and doesn't deserve the badge. Keep in mind not all of us are like that. Please refrain from lumping us all in the same category.

I know when I went to the academy there was at least one recruit who we all knew was going to be a bully. This didn't go unnoticed by the staff. It wasn't shortly after that he was terminated. Todays hiring practices are very different in most communities in hopes you weed out the undesirables.

Years have gone by since that day and I still stay in contact with many of the Officers I graduated with. Perhaps it’s the area I'm in but we consider ourselves normal people like you. We all have a difficult job and its not easy to make everyone happy. I don't expect to be treated differently than any other person. I do appreciate being treated the same way I treat others with respect.

Even after the first and second life saving award the only difference I feel is a sense of pride to be doing what I do. I still get visited by the same girl that I saved 5 years ago from choking to death. Same goes for the people I saved from a burning car wreck. You see its these moments that make it worth all the grief. Every newspaper printing with a made up version of a story to make us look bad. Most people don’t understand how difficult the job really is. If there are a few things I learned in my first year as a Police Officer is the media lies to make a story juicier to sell papers. I’ve seen it many times. Last but not least , you can sacrifice everything and it’s never enough for some people. You just have to keep moving forward.

Don’t lose hope in your law enforcement officers. There are many great ones out there doing a great job to keep you safe.

Many of the problems stem from poor pay and poor selection. Many young people enter the police force at a far too early age and with little experience. They all too easily develop a distorted view of life because of the poor attitude in their instructors and mentors.

Police are primarily there to police the peace - law enforcement and prosecution is just another part of their job. Unfortunately this latter part is often concentrated on to the detriment of their standing with the public.

All these crappy US shows don't help.

Pay them more and be more selective, that is the best solution.

First of all, "police" is a group. The act or state of holding unreasonable preconceived judgments or convictions about a group is called "prejudice".

Prejudice says that "police" are not friendly with common people. The fact of the matter is that there are many police officers out there that are very friendly. More importantly, there are many many MANY police officers out there who are not corrupt.

The news likes to show clips of cops beating on people and being corrupt. The movies are all about cops who are racist and corrupt. Does this happen in real life? Of course! Do all of the police officers do it? Of course not.. but the actions of the few make the rest of us look bad.

Then what happens? Joe blow gets arrested for the crack he is caught red-handed smoking. He goes home and tells his neighbors how corrupt the cops are for "planting that pipe" on him. Judy Jetson agrees, saying that she ran a stop sign and that cop just wouldn't cut her a break because he is an ____ or because he is racist against ____ And, of course, everyone agrees, because we all know that the cops are corrupt.

So then rumor spreads. Prejudice spreads. When the cops respond to the neighborhood to help out in a fight, the people expect him to make the bad guys stop, but nobody saw anything, nobody knows nuthin'. So the cop, not seeing the act himself, can't make an arrest on something he didn't see and no one will attest to. Now he is a lazy cop. Same thing on a vehicle accident where the officer won't say who is "at fault".

Now, try putting yourself in the officer's shoes:

You pull someone over for speeding and they tell you, "I'm a tax payer, go find some REAL criminals. Stop Picking on me"

An accident happens on the freeway because of speeding and its , "Where were the cops? Why didn't they pull this guy over before he killed someone?"

You respond to that assault and 25 people stand around throwing in their two cents about what happened, but when you try to take a statement, they don't know anything. When you tell them to go inside and stop yelling at the people you are trying to talk with, you are cussed at. You can't make an arrest and the people get ticked off at you for not "doing your job".

And then, there is always the guy who thinks he is going to be "funny" and be a smart-a__, deliberately push every button the cop has while trying to stay within his "legal" rights. This is the guy who stands outside and cusses at people because of "freedom of speech". Or who decides to walk up in the middle of an investigation that he has nothing to do with and ask questions or tell the cop how to do his job, then screams harassment when he is finally arrested for being a nuisance.

Cops are human just like you and I. Some of us are good people. Some of us think we have absolute power. Some of us are insecure. Some of us are able to ignore the comments from the public and work their 8 hours. Some of us let it get under our skins and lose our temper at the wrong time. Some of us are opportunistic- we see that 80,000 in drug money and take a few hundred because we know no one will know. Some of us were born into a family of criminals and want to do something different in our lives- of that group, some are successful while some are drawn back into crime. Some of believe that we are above the law can drink and drive without consequence. Some of us are stuck deciding whether to arrest our fellow off-duty officer and face ostricism from our coworkers or or call a ride for them to get them off the road. Some of us are stupid enough to let the person drive home. Some of us are talkative. Some of us are shy. Some of us are professional, unprofessional, lazy, ditzy, or just plain A__ holes.

People don't normally call the police because they are happy about something. They tend to call the police when something is wrong and they are upset or angry when they call. Police spend most of their shift correcting and fixing everyone elses problems only to end the day being the bad-guy. It makes for a cranky person.

Remember that the next time you deal with a police officer. Try treating them as a regular human being you have just met and see if they don't treat you the same.
