You really can't predict how good a dog is, the first thing is making sure it comes from a good home, a breeder that takes the time to start training before letting the dogs go. It really is all based on opinion. My boyfriends family had one for 18 years. He was the most well behaved dog I have ever met. obeyed all commands, even fetched. My mom's husband had one as well, she was horrible, after 13 years they never even were able to get her potty trained. So really you never know until you have one. In my opinion the boys are easier to train, in every breed actually. Mainly because they tend to be more submissive than their female counterpart, I have had always girl dogs, but I also know how to train them, but if you have no experience with training a female dog, just know you have your work cut out for you. I recently bought a Schweenie, I wanted a shih tzu and my boyfriend a daschund, so we got the best of both worlds. I know all of you are going to go off about designer dogs. I don't care, I got this dog for a third of the price of either breed, and I get to enjoy the benefit of both in one dog.

Around the £600 - £750 mark if you go to a reputable breeder. Please don't be daft enough to buy a "bargain" that has probably got inherited problems. You will only pay out more in vets fees, as well as encouraging backyard breeders and puppy farmers. Be prepared to be vetted by a decent breeder (I make folk jump through hoops for my pups!), but if the breeder wants to know about you, it's a good indication that you're on the right road. By the way, do, do, do research the breed a little more.

If you are serious about obtaining a Dachshund, please don't call it a sausage dog, breeders will not be too pleased if you enquire about a sausage dog. There are 6 varieties of Dachshund, you need to decide which variety you want & contact one of the breed clubs to find details of reputable breeders who will tell you the going price.

lady chick
Everyone is poking fun at you...for the term sausage dog. I think you said it because it's hard to spell the other name......
..........DACHSHUND.......
They cost about $150.00 in the states that is if you want to be able to register it , another $25 or so to register.

I love my Betty Lou aka LuLu
Good Luck! They are clean, shed very little and are quite loving.......Very independent though.
Make sure you establish in the beginning who is the alpha pack leader.

Usually, which too long for me. I consider it depends on the guy and his face though. Certain guys can easily pull off long hair and other folks can't.

Hi, if you're in the UK then you can check out the adverts on the ePupz site to see a range of prices for Dachshund pups:

Shorthaired ones range from £550 to £850
http://www.epupz.co.uk/search/puppies_for_sale.asp?breed=Dachshund+-+Shorthaired&area=all&st=1&pn=1&rn=10&sortby=price

Longhaired from £500 to £750
http://www.epupz.co.uk/search/puppies_for_sale.asp?breed=Dachshund+-+Shorthaired&area=all&st=1&pn=1&rn=10&sortby=price

Wirehaired from £450 to £750
http://www.epupz.co.uk/search/puppies_for_sale.asp?breed=Dachshund+-+Wirehaired&area=all&st=1&pn=1&rn=10&sortby=price+DESC

Miniatures range from £350 for an adult, £500 for a puppy to £750:
http://www.epupz.co.uk/search/puppies_for_sale.asp?breed=Miniature+Dachshund&area=all&st=1&pn=1&rn=10&sortby=price+DESC

The price will vary depending on the breeding of the dog & also the location of the breeder.

However, I'd recommend that, if you were looking for a pup, now you know the range of prices to expect, you read the advice on the Kennel Club website first:
http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/buying/index.html

And maybe also use the Champdogs site or a Dachshund Club or the Kennel Club puppy register when looking for one:
http://www.champdogs.co.uk/

This site gives links to all the specific breed rescue sites:
http://www.dogpages.org.uk/breeds.htm

And here's a link to Dachshund Rescue Uk - which also has a puppy list:
http://www.dachshundclub.co.uk/dachshund_rescue.htm

Hope this helps
