And I'm amazed that so many people think that using a 'harness' means that parents are treating children like animals by tying them up...but surely it's safer for us to have these reins than to have an extremely excitable child run out into a road and get hit by a car, or to have them run off and get lost in busy shop, or abducted!

Isn't it time that people stopped criticising those who just look out for the protection and saftey of their youngsters?

Oh- I'm not saying that those who don't use them aren't helping their children be safe though! Don't think that just because you choose not to use them I'm saying you don't care about safety, I just think that those who use them shouldn't be yelled at for making the decision to use reins....

When I first saw a kid in a harness many years ago, my initial reaction was positive. I told my wife, "What a great idea." It still is.

My parents used a harness on a times when they thought it was for my own good. I had a tendancy to wander so if it was REALLY busy places or unsafe places for me they would use it until I learned to keep up or not go off. I am a well adjusted adult, I don't feel my parents did me any wrong. If I think I can protect my child by making sure they don't wander off, and if need be, I'll look into using some kind of harness aswell. I think that every child is different and some don't need a harness, but some do and it is up to the parents to decide and should not be yelled at. TWhen children wander off, bad things could happen to them and I would do almost anything to help protect my child.

I agree, it does seem sort of strange and almost like you are keeping your kid on a "leash", but in all honesty, it's really safe. I just hope it's comfortable for the child? I'm not sure, I haven't seen anyone use them in a while. I think they are expecially good for places like parking lots where they could easily run out in front of a car.

So if they choose to use the harness, then that's their choice. It's probably all they can do to keep their hyper child from danger out in public.

I remember when I was a teen ager and would go to the mall and see parents with there kids on what I thought looked like a dog leash walking around. My friends and I would walk behind these people and bark at them thinking they were teating their children like dogs.

Now that I am older and have a child. I understand that these things are not that bad. Also they are for safety reason that they are used and not to be cruel. I now longer bark when I see them.

Yeah, whenever I first saw a child with one on I was like what in the....? And I thought it was weird. But like you said, if you have an overly excitable child that you just can't keep ahold of and your worried about them, then it is a good idea in some cases.

Ya, I have never used one, but I have a certain amount of respect for those who do, because at least their keeping an eye on their children. Unlike a large number of parents I've seen.

You sound like a very sensible Mother and I would ignore those who think they know better than you
