it depends how old your pc is
i would suspect just a simple pci card with extra expansion communication ports, inserted into the mother board similar to your video card. i would forget about com ports, and move to usb technology if u can.
if your computer is older, you will need an isa card. these are harder to come by.

external seriel port conversion are available with USB connectivity.u can attach such communication port.

i think u also get PCI cards(not so sure)
