Three weeks ago, we got a 7 month old black lab puppy. He's been fed Purina Puppy Chow all his life, and I know it's not considered a good food for dogs. I bought a bag of Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul for him, but then I realized the store doesn't sell the large breed formula that the company makes. Should I switch to a large breed puppy food? I'm considering Nutro Natural Choice. (I haven't opened the Chicken Soup brand yet.) Help!

The regular puppy formula of Chicken Soup is fine for a Lab. You don't have to feed the large breed puppy formula. Go ahead and feed it...make sure to switch slowly mixing the old food into the new food over the course of at least a week until you are totally feeding the CS.

Chicken soup is a wonderful food.

Don't be fooled into thinking a large breed food (puppy or adult) that contains glucosamine is of any real value..the amount of glucosamine in these foods is very minimal and really doesn't contribute to joint health.

Also the larger the breed the shorter the time they should be on puppy food. A lab should be switched to a good adult food around 6-7 months of age. A Great Dane should NEVER have puppy food of any kind.

I don't know about St B's, but no dane puppy should EVER be fed any brand puppy food. They are very sensitive and need to be on a good quality adult food. Nothing in a grocery store, or Walmart is a good food. A few examples of good food are: Eagle Pack Natural Canidea Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul Innova If you can't find these locally, check out their web sites. If you can't order, try to find a food locally with similar ingredients and nutrition label info. Good luck!

as a owner of large breed dogs i will tell you that the large breed or regular does not matter the big thing to look at is the protien large dogs need more protien than smaller. My dogs eat bill jax witch is very expensive but the darn dogs will eat nothing else. I feed my german shepard regular ol kibbles and bits. the brand and type will only really make a diffrence if you are breeding the dogs, then i say go with science diet or bill jax

He really doen't need to be on a puppy food right now. I change my Shepherd's to adult food around 4 months or 5 months. The Chicken Soup is supposed to be a fairly good food, it is made by Diamond. I feed Diamond Premium Adult here.

i have had great danes and will tell you first hand food does matter. nutro is awesome, i mean awesome. it has everything you need for your dog. he will absorb more protien and have less waste. it has great conjointants and glucosamine to help with growing bones and strong joints. stay away from science diet and other stuff. give you a test.. try nutro for a month.. i guarantee you will notice a difference in the dogs coat. it will be shinier and look healthier too. it is a great food and if your not happy, which you will be, it also has a great guarantee. good luck!!

If your pup will grow into a large sized dog, use puppy food specifically made for large breeds. It encourages slow growth for large-breed puppies.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Feed large breed pups puppy food for up to 12 to 18 months, depending on the breed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These special diets for large breed puppies is important, as they can help stop or put off the onset of hip dysplasia, a painful joint disease that large breeds are prone to.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most dog food companies recommend keeping the dogs on puppy chow for 12 to 18 months. the larger the breed the longer the puppy chow. sometimes their bones grow faster then their muscles causing certain problems..........Don't confuse the pup with a different food. Most vets recommend eating dry food only. Also I have never heard of the other dog food ....however a lot of those dog foods are meant for apartment dwelling dogs that can't get out to poo as often.
Be sure and check with your vet. If you want to give your pup a treat give it puppy treats. I call them puppy cookies.
Giving your dog the wrong food for the age is not really recommended.
Good Luck!
One Size Does Not Fit All
Not all puppies have the same nutritional needs.
Large-breed puppies tend to grow very quickly. Yet, controlling their growth is critical for proper development. To support balanced muscular and skeletal development, your puppy needs a diet with specially adjusted levels of nutrients.
