Your cousin is the son or daughter of the sister of brother of either of your parents.

These might help you start off:

Siplings = brothers and sisters

Cousin: The children of your parents siblings ( their brothers and sisters) are your cousins.

Thus you will say: " I saw my cousin today." You don't have to indicate which side of the family unless it is someone you are close too. Then you can say:

" I saw my cousin today. He/she is my cousin from my father/mother's side. "

Niece: The child ( daughter ) of your sister or brother would be your niece.
Nephew: The child ( son) of your sister or brother is your nephew.
