He was known for being a romantic, and exceptionally passionate. When he felt that he loved a woman, and she refused him, he was relentless, he did whatever he could to gain her interest (including some questionable methods, threats, blackmail ect.) This was a time in history when marriages were generally arranged. Men were intimate with theirs wives for pro-creation reasons, then they went off to their mistresses. Women had their own affairs, but always longed for the fairytale romance, which he gave to them for a while. Basically, it's a long story, but he was different than most men of that time. He gave women what they wanted, and treated them as equals, which was highly unusual for that time period.
