can anyone settle a domestic arguement ??
I am being told that you cannot take blocks of chocolate into new Zealand because of import restrictions on food

Yes, it's not a problem. New Zealand does have very strict regulations regarding which foods may or may not be brought in, and if you actually read all the documentation you would probably be left with the impression that no foods at all may be taken into the country.
However, I live in the UK and frequently make trips back to NZ. The first time I wanted to bring in chocolate, I simply walked through the "Goods to Declare" channel and asked the officers, who informed me that it was fine. Since then, because in NZ the "Nothing to Declare" line is usually longer than the other line, I tend to always walk through this lane and ask again like I don't already know. Never been told that I couldn't take it in!

Chocolate in small quantities can be brought in, provided the country of origin does not have any restrictions regarding bovine disease. Remember 'mad cow disease' where everything was restricted until the all clear was given, and that took years.
Best to check with the nearest Embassy or Consulate first, or better still ring the Dept. of Agriculture for the best answer.

There are no restrictions on the importation of chocolate bars into New Zealand. See the attached link to the MAF website. You will see under the category 'cakes and sweets' the following statement.

All baked cakes not containing meat (e.g., moon cakes) are permitted entry. This includes wedding and Christmas fruit cakes and Christmas minced fruit pies. All boiled sweets and chocolate bars are permitted entry.

There is a major concern in New Zealand regarding dioxins in some fats and restictions on many products are in force - mainly from Belgium and Holland. Chocolate products have not been included in the list of products for withdrawal. Chocolate is not considered to be a public health concern because it contains very little animal fat.

Processed foods are ok, so a block of chocolate is fine. There are restrictions on some foods - fruit, veg, meat, dairy, honey etc. You still have to declare it though.

but why would you want to, nz has the best chocolate! whittakers peanut/coconut slabs, buzz bars, etc .... mmmm
