I was watching "Band of Brothers" and in a scene a soldier is injured and an "M" is written on his forehead in blood. He was given morphine before this so I'm trying to figure out if the "M" was written to say that he received morphine or if it meant that he had a mortal wound and not expected to live.

M = Morphine (one for each styret)
T= Tourniquet applied

Morphine CAN be administered more than once... in fact it can be administered until it eases the wounded's pain. The reason you put the "M" on is to let the Aid-station or hospital know he was dosed... it influences how they diagnose and anestithize.

Blood is used because it's THERE... but we always carried a sharpie or grease pencil for that purpose

You put the M on the forehead so that when he gets to the aid station you know he has been given morphine. This helps to prevent overdosing patients. It also helps to write the time he was given the Morphine. This system is still in use today.

The "M" was put there so that the field hospital was aware that the injured soldier had been given morphine and was not given another dose on arrival and kill him.

When your tacked in blood your not expected to live or already dead. Moriphine is the only thing that eases the dying process enough. I may not be correct cause basic was soo long ago but I think thats what it meant.

It means the person should be shipped immidiately to McDonald's to be used as meat.

Just kidding - I'm pretty sure it means that they've been given morphine.

Sounds like he had a mortal wound and was not expected to live. You say it was written in the color of blood?
