As long as Taco Bell keeps their 99 cent menu, I don't care.
02/05/06 - I didn't say that Taco Bell and food served in Mexico are the same. I don't give a rat's butt about the tortilla epidemic in Mexico, the ingrediants used in tortillas, or Mexican culture for that matter since I don't live there. Of course Mexicans will use this as another excuse to cross the border.

ok the reason why it's front page news in mexico is because it IS their biggest problem right now! don't you think they are smart enough to deal with their own crap. well they are!! and if you don't know about it, then butt out. tortillas used to be like 70 cents a pound. now they are $3.70 a pound. if you only make $5 a day, this is a BIG flipping difference!!! instead of eating 3 times a day, you get to eat once a day.
it's true that a lot of wealthy mexicans could care less, but unfortunately, the backbone of mexico is on the poor side. the tortilla is the mexican "plate and spoon." the tortillas in mexico are not like the ones in the US. they are processed a special way, to include a large amount of calcium. they are also where mexicans get over 40% of their protein from, because many mexicans cannot afford quality meat. because of these factors, mexican children have some of the highest rates of bone density in the world. they have very little problems with skelatle issues.
but now, because the vast majority of mexicans are uneducated on food...they are forced to switch to cheaper options, such as cup of noodle, and top roman. well, these foods are high in starch and choleserol. they are also low on nutrients. they are not providing the unusual amount of nutrients that the tortilla provided. (AGAIN, if you ate only tortillas made the US you would be a big fat slob, but the mexican tortillas are made differently.)
so...this crisis is equivilant to a famine. you are more than tripling the number one food source for the majority of mexicans. in the 80's this very same issues caused a near break in the mexican economy.
last year mexico was exporting corn meal, under vicente fox, agains the advisement of mexicans officials. and now they are in trouble. felipe calderon had to buy BACK the very corn he sold!! food feeds the mind and satisfies the soul. hungry people means angry people, angry people means riots. and everyone knows riots are NOT a good thing.

Increase in Tortilla will effect America as well because of the massive increase in subsides to ethanol producers. The problem is made worse by the fact American traiffs on sugarcane from Brazil, and central is 54 cents a gallon, but the subidisy on ethanol is 51 cents. Bush made a mistake with ethonal here possibly because the effects of the torilla are starting to spill over in America with the incrase costs of Soda, Corn, Tortillas, chips. The corns made in Mexico are not overprocess crap we eat, but still whenever a govermentr subidiez ethanol those effects travel across borders. The poor Mexican get most of the nutrional value out of tortilla. Food costs will increase in America, and Mexico were gonna both feel its nasty effects, and thanks Bush for preventing economics.
The day traders, and middle men will be taking the biggest bites out of this one, and if oil prices collaspe we just created economic distrotion that will take time to unravel. End all subidies to producers is needed.

Since tortillas are a staple on the table of most all Mexican people,it is a big deal there. In Mexico the price has gone up for food but not the wages. Here in the USA our income is trying to keep up with the higher cost of essentials.
If the cost of corn flour goes up to 85cents a lb from 25 cents, and wages stay the same its a huge problem in Mexico.More and more people will be entering the USA illegally to try to make more money.I am not in any way justifying the illegal aliens ,just answering the question truthfully as I can.

Its an economic situation for the Citizens of Mexico, just like when our dairy prices rise up, and our fuel cost sky rocket here in the U.S..
And I agree Taco Bell is not Mexican food, its a chain owned by Pepsi co. If the menu isn't in Spanish its just not worth eating. Here in Chicago our Mexican restaurants throw down on some good food, only the North-siders by Wrigley Field eat Taco Bell. Okay I confess I've been known to stop by a Taco Bell when my dog wants a mexi-melt, its the same as dog food.

katsulover has a very good point. Mexican government is corrupt and if the citizens get involved there is a high chance something might happen to them.
and just so everybody knows, taco bell is NOT a mexican restaurant. It is a cheap immitation. Actual mexican food does not use hard shell tortillas, they use CORN tortillas. lol just letting eveyone know.
P.S. We also do not make our meat like that, we use fine meat and I find Taco Bell to be very greasy.

I could not believe, out of all the much more important issues in the country of Mexico, this is the one that the government decides to put out in the forefront as one of the most important? Come on....
