A standard wheel is made of a steel ring that holds the tire with a steel middle part welded in place. Cheap and mass produced with a hub cap on it.
Alloy wheels are made from different metals like aluminum (more expensive than steel but not as strong) right up to magnessium or even titanium (massively expensive but as strong or even stronger than steel). The common term for them is mags because in the old days the were made only from magnessium.
Usually they are casted and only critical areas are cleaned up by a machine shop because the is the cheapest way to make them. Sometimes they are made from a solid piece of the alloy. These are much more expensive but they are also much stronger.
Alloy wheels are always lighter than steel so the reduce rolling inertia and make the car a little lighter saving you probably a gallon of gas a year.

Alloy wheels are made of a combination of metals which make them lighter but strong. They are supposed to give better performace and certainly enhance the look of a vehicle when fitted.

It's a wheel made of alloy. It reduces the unsprung weight, because it's lighter than a steel wheel. They look much better than steel wheels, but that's not the reason they're used.

Aluminium alloys or aluminum alloys are alloys of aluminium, often with copper, zinc, manganese, silicon, or magnesium. They are much lighter and more corrosion resistant than plain carbon steel, but not quite as corrosion resistant as pure aluminium. Bare aluminium alloy surfaces will keep their apparent shine in a dry environment, but light amounts of corrosion products rub off easily onto skin when touched
Galvanic corrosion can be rapid when aluminum alloy is placed in proximity to stainless steel in a wet environment. Aluminum alloy and stainless steel parts should not be mixed in water-containing systems or outdoor installations.
