There is no blanket method of determining which mushrooms are poisonous and which aren't. Some harmless species resmble deadly ones, and vice versa.
The only sure way to be safe is to recognise the harmless and dangerous ones by their species.
The nutritional value of mushrooms is questionable anyway. Survivalists usually advise not to eat them in survival situations, simply because the risk is much greater than the benefit.

Get a book, and ASK--ask people who know and are confident in teaching!
But one you can always count on is puffballs (as long as they aren't growing on anything poisonous.) If a mushroom is white all the way through and is a big puffy ball, it's a puffball. Taste varies, but it is safe and easy to recognize. I've eaten a few--the giant puffballs are completely delicious, but more rare than pasture puffballs (which are brown on the outside and look a little warty.) Giant puffballs look like big white soccer balls.
Mushrooms with caps and pores are easier to recognize, as most mushrooms with caps have gills. These include boletus (porcini) mushrooms and the poisonous ones have weird colors when you bruise or cut them.
Get a book--you need pictures and good descriptions. But I've eaten wild mushrooms and I'm still typing!

They aren't, but many that are poisonous look similar to those that are edible... and one should know a little more than what is in a mushroom identification book to pick and eat.... since the consequences are rather.... uh, terminal if you make a mistake

You have to know what breed they are. What breeds are poisinous and which aren't. Their is like a million different kinds of mushrooms and a lot of them look very similar...so watch out. Get a book about mushrooms.

So im sitting in the docs office waiting for a physical. The nurse took my blood pressure and pulse and seemed like she was embarassed and didn't want to make eye contact. When she left the exam room i sat there waiting for the doctor patiently. I wear mechanics pants and for some reason didn't wear underwear that day. I glanced down and noticed a hole in the seam of my pants and my testicle was hanging out of the hole that was so small my nut was purple. It was kinda embarassing.
